After a combination of the public vote and the professional judges, the American candidate Josh DeMarco, who works and lives in Philadelphia, PA, was selected as Best Emerging Talent 2017!

My experience winning The Mentor was surreal!” said DeMarco. “I’ve never competed in a competition that gave me 100% creative control on every aspect of my look. Not to mention the fact that it was in a different country! Every competitor did such incredible work – I really just feel honored to have been chosen to participate, let alone to have won! This experience wouldn’t have existed without Sergi Bancells believing in me, and I can’t think enough for being my mentor.

Learn how Josh created the winning look!
I’ve always been inspired by bold shapes and mixing smooth and textured finishes together. I’ve had this vision in my head for some time now of a short structured haircut with a heavy disconnection. Imagine the way a jellyfish moves – they’re very long and lifeless and then have the ability to change shape within an instant. So I took that movement and translated it to a head of hair. I pre-colored extensions and put them under a pre-cut hairstyle that I did, making a similar shape. I thought that would look cool on stage… but what if I cut it all off? So that’s what I did. And sticking to my precision roots, I made an exaggerated nape shape and adorned it with gems creating another visual surprise for the audience and judges,” explains Josh.

The Awards Ceremony took place on the main stage of the MCB by Beauté Sélection in front of more than 1,000 people. Amongst extensive media coverage on Estetica Magazine, Christophe Gabreau, co-chairman of MCB by Beauté Sélection, offered Josh DeMarco the opportunity to perform a personal show at the next MCB Hair Show in Lyon (France). Receiving his trophy was also an opportunity to recall that art is an essential part in the career of a hairdresser and allows future generations to draw on the most beautiful profession.
